Leroy Blakey 85, of Danville, Kentucky, died Saturday, September 23, 2023. He was born December 8, 1937, in Angine, West Virginia to the late George and Polly Blakey. Leroy loved to sing songs of praise and worship since he was nine years old. He was a member of the gospel group, “Royal Trumpets” of Glen Gene, West Virginia. His favorite songs were, “Been in the Storm too Long” and “Walk Around Heaven all Day”.
When he resided in West Virginia, Leroy worked at Oak Hill Hospital. Later, he moved to Chicago, Illinois and worked at West Town Bus Company until he retired. While residing in Danville, Kentucky, he was a faithful choir member of Saint James African Methodist Episcopal Church. Leroy loved life and enjoyed being with his friends. He always looked forward to attending the Kentucky Derby every year and loved watching all sports.
He leaves to cherish his loving wife of 53 years, Marjorie Blakey; children, Karla Blakey, Sharon Johnson, Lee Anthony Stevens (Barbara), Gregory Moore, Gary Blakey, Deshawn Blakey, Ian Rosser, Isiah McCormack and Javion Green; sisters-in-law, Mary Bass and Molly Bass; brother-in-law, Paul Bass; nieces, Darlene Bass, Gregory Bass and Teressa Blakey; nephews, Kenny Bass, Ricky Blakey and Neal Blakey; best friends, Fred Gray and Katherine Leonard; and five grandchildren.
Leroy is predeceased by his children, Eugene Blakey and Kenny Blakey; and siblings, Geraldine Bass, Mandy Blakey, George Blakey Jr.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Saturday, September 29 at St. James A.M.E. Church in Danville. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. following the visitation with Rev. Ralph Boyd Smith officiating.
