Burial for Veterans

Stith Funeral Home supports our troops and respect the sacrifices made by veterans and their families. The men and women who serve our country represent the very best of all of us, and through their courage and commitment, they keep our nation safe and free.

We are honored to help families of veterans, working to ensure that all veterans receive the honors earned through their service. We offer funerals with military honors, coordination of earned benefits, and special cemetery discounts.

At Stith Funeral Home we assist with completing all the paperwork required by the Veterans Administration to claim earned benefits, to make the process easy for your family.

All honorable discharged US Veterans are entitled to

  • A grave or niche in the closest National Cemetery/
  • The opening/closing (digging) of the grave or niche
  • If a full burial, a basic outer container for the casket
  • Flag to be folded and presented to next of kin
  • Two-man flag detail, will also play taps
  • VA stone in National or private cemetery
  • Burial allowance benefits – contingent on service

At the Time of Death - we will make all the arrangements for you.

  • Scheduling burial in Camp Nelson National Cemetery or other approved VA cemetery
  • Obtaining flag for funeral service
  • Military Honors – two-man detail from associated branch to fold and present the flag
  • American Legion Caswell-Saufley Post #18 to provide the 21-gun Salute (Rifle volley) Monday – Friday if available, American Legion is a volunteer Veteran group. Donations are appreciated to cover expenses.
  • VA government provided Stone with an explanation of options
  • Assistance with filing burial benefits

You will need the DD214 or other discharge documents of the Veteran or service member whose military service will be used to determine eligibility for burial in a VA national cemetery.

Their discharge from service needs to have been under conditions other than dishonorable.

If you can’t find these documents, please ask for our help. We can request them from the National Archives, however, It may take several days to check eligibility if you don’t have discharge documents.

Information needed about the deceased:

  • Name
  • Gender
  • Social Security number or Military Service number (Veteran ID)
  • Date of birth
  • Relationship to the service member or Veteran whose military service will be used to decide eligibility
  • Marital status
  • Date of death (and zip code and county at the time of death)

Information needed about the next of kin (the closest living relative of the deceased):

  • Name
  • Relationship to the deceased
  • Social Security number
  • Phone number
  • Address
