Joseph Francis Major, 87, of Danville died May 6, 2017. Born April 14, 1930 in Dunmore, Pa., he was the son of the late Arthur and Mary Walsh Major. He graduated from St. Paul High School and began a career of several interesting jobs such as the ATF, plant manager at Thom McAn and a deputy at the Boyle Co. Jail. He served in both the United States Army and the Air Force during the Korean conflict. Joe was a lay minister and member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight. Joe is predeceased by his siblings, Jane Grochowski, Lois Dowdell, Jack Major, Marilou McGurrin, Betty Cozalyn, Frank Major, Martin Major, Arthur Major and Mary Catherine Major. He is survived by his wife, Judy Major; four children, Deborah (Danny) Thompson of Danville; Michael (Amy) Purcell and Joseph F. (Kim) Major II, both of Louisville and Stephen (Dianna) Major of Indianapolis; two sisters, Anne Marie Glyde of Avon, Ohio and Peg (Frank) McCafferty of North Olmsted, Ohio; two brothers, Tom (Donna) Major of Summers Point, NJ and Tony (Hazel) Major of Macungie, Pa; three granddaughters, Megan Thompson, Brooke Thompson and Adria Major; six step-grandsons, Sam Ronald, Lewis Ronald, Daniel Thompson, Andrew (Sam) Thompson, Tyler Cozart and William (Arlene) Cozart; and six great grandchildren, Emerson Thompson, Bentley Cozart, Kennedy Cozart, Lena Morales, Jayden Morales and Wednesday Cozart. Visitation will be from 12 to 2 p.m., Friday at Stith Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Rev. Odis Clark will officiate. Military Rites will be provided by the American Legion Caswell-Saufley Post # 19. Memorial donations are suggested to Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, American Legion or VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars).
