Eleanor Clay

Eleanor “Ellie” Monohan Clay, 71, died May 1, 2021 at her home on Herrington Lake after a valiant fight with cancer. Born the youngest sister to three older brothers on July 15, 1949 in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of the late Edward Sheehan and Mary Lally Monohan of Ft. Mitchell. Ellie worked for Caldwell Banker - VIP as a realtor and found great joy as a substitute teacher. With her passing, she joins her late husband John Richard Clay of Danville. Ellie knew no strangers. She was endlessly hopeful and generous with her love. Her one rule was to make yourself at home, and she\'d always make sure you were properly fed. She could get a splinter out of any foot without tears. She was especially fond of red turtlenecks, but never hesitated to wear a costume when the time called for an Easter Bunny or a wicked witch. She invariably knew who the killer was within the first 15 minutes of a movie. She was a devoted wife, sister, and mother. She is survived by her three daughters, Katherine Clay (Ryan) St. Clair, Sarah Eleanor Clay, and Elizabeth Eaves Clay; her three brothers Edward, Dennis and Sean Monohan; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless others she held close to her heart. The funeral mass will be held at 12 p.m., Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Danville. Celebrant will be Father Anthony McLaughlin. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at Stith Funeral Home, Danville. Please sign the online guestbook or send a Hug from Home. Guestbook

  1. Ellie was one of the sweetest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She was kind, funny, smart and gave the best hugs! Every time she spoke to me, even just a month ago when she called the office by accident, she ended the conversation by telling me that she loved me. I am a better person for knowing her and I will miss her so very much. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and loved ones.

  2. I will miss everything about you Aunt Ellie! You and Uncle Richie were ALWAYS there for me! By far the sweetest couple, the best souls, the biggest hearts! I miss you all terribly! God gained the most awesome angels!

  3. Ellie was one of the most welcoming people I’ve ever met. Since I was 6 she welcomed me into the fold of her life. She gave amazing hugs and always made sure I was fed and loved. She was like a second mom for me when I would spend nights with Liz and our friends. She drove Liz and I all the way to Florida by herself for spring break! Such a kind and tender soul. Sending all my love and hugs.

  4. So very sorry to learn of Ellie’s passing. She was one of my favorite Jennie Rogers moms! My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

  5. All Dirksens were sorry to hear of Ellie’s passing. She was full of love and kindness, energy and positivity! She will be truly missed on Herrington Lake and elsewhere.
