Darrell Taylor

Darrell Glen Taylor, 84, of Danville, died on January 24, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born July 28, 1939, to the late Zachary T. and Idella Wilson Taylor. Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his siblings J.W. (Dora) Taylor, Francis T. (Donnie) Russell, Edith (Wesley) Reed, and Virginia Taylor. Darrell started his first year of school in a one-room school in Casey County at the age of four. His family moved to Parksville Crosspike when he was in the fifth grade. Darrell loved to play basketball and joined the school team in the 8th grade and played until he graduated with the Class of 1956. He was 16 years old. After graduation, he received a basketball scholarship to Campbellsville College. During the summer months, he was injured in a diving accident while swimming in a farm pond. His injuries were severe and kept him from attending college that fall. He then joined his father in farming. He became the youngest member of the \"Crosspike Gang\". This was a group of 10 - 12 men who spent time harvesting tobacco for each other. Two years after graduation, he married Phyllis. They purchased a farm on the Parksville Crosspike. He became a full-time farmer and dairy operator. They became the parents of Lisa, Becky and Jeff. While farming and dairying, he started a job with the U.S. Postal Service in Danville as a part-time rural route carrier. He worked on all five routes out of Danville and at one time delivered mail to 500 families in Boyle County. In 1986, he started working on a full-time route. He gave up farming and dairying. He retired in 1999 from the U.S. Postal Service. During the early days of the Boyle County Fire Department, Darrell was elected as a member of the Boyle County Fire Protection District. He served for nine years and was elected head of the Fire Board for three years during this time. During his tenure, the Parksville and Mitchellsburg Fire Department buildings were built. For the first time, the firefighters were paid for attending monthly training sessions. Darrell has served as Deacon at Parksville Baptist Church for 58 years and the past 23 years as Chairman of the Trustees. He was Chairman of the Building Committee that planned and oversaw the building of the Family Life Center, which was completed in 2006. The building serves as a community building for events, and for the past 20 years, it has been the home of voting for six different precincts in the community. Since his retirement, Darrell has stayed busy working with the House and Grounds Committee to keep the area looking neat and beautiful. Darrell was proud of Parksville Baptist Church and was proud to call it home for the past 66 years. Darrell and Phyllis celebrated their 66th Wedding anniversary On August 4^th,  2023. So many words could be used to describe Darrell’s life, but one simple word defines it in totality, “Servant”. He lived his whole life with a true servant’s heart for everyone he knew, but most of all for his loving Savior, Jesus. Darrell is survived by his loving wife Phyllis Taylor, their three children Lisa Taylor (Jeffrey) Hasty, Rebecca (David) Clem, and Jeffery (Lisa) Taylor, their grandchildren Brandon Clem, Dustin Clem, Bethany (Micah) Huber, Rachel Hasty, and Jacob Hasty, great-grandchild Noah Clem, his siblings Madelyn T. Hillis, William “Billy” Taylor, and Marlin (Karen) Taylor. The funeral service will be at 4 p.m., Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Parksville Baptist Church with Rev. Phillip Coffman officiating. Visitation will be 2 – 4 p.m., before the service at the church. Private family burial will be held at Parksville Cemetery.
