Agnes Lorene Middleton Whalen Johnson, 92, went home to the Lord Monday, December 31, 2018. She was born April 19, 1926 in Danville to James and Stella Franklin Middleton. Agnes served with her first husband Rev. Dale Whalen as Senior Pastor of several churches including First Church of God, Owingsville; First Church of God, Winchester; South Meridian Church of God, Anderson, IN; First Church of God, Morehead; First Church of God, Kingsport, TN; First Church of God, Phoenix, AZ; White Chapel Church of God, South Daytona, FL and Meridian Church of God, Indianapolis, IN. Both Pastor Whalen and Agnes served on state and national boards. She served many years in local, state and national Women of the Church of God. After the death of her husband Dale Whalen, she married John R. Johnson. They served as interim pastors of seven churches in South Central Kentucky. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband John R. Johnson and Riki D. Johnson. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Whalen Bentley of Montgomery, TX and Lisa Whalen (Walt) Morris of Noblesville, IN; her stepdaughters, Ginger Johnson (Danny) Dodge of Denver, Colorado and Deborah Johnson Graham of Oregon; her sons, Dr. Daniel L. (Kathy) Whalen of Danville and Mark (Karen) Whalen of Jacksonville, FL; a sister, Pauline Sims of Danville; a brother, Gene Middleton of Lebanon, OH; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 19, 2019 at First Church of God. Bro. Kevin Cummins will officiate.

  5. Agnes welcomed me in her home and heart . Made me feel so loved ! My life is forever changed by her , she made me want to be a better person. I will treasure our friendship for as long as I live . I’m going to miss my friend terribly and look forward to the day that I will see her again . I love you my sweet Agnes ! ❤️

  8. It is with sorrow of heart and a keen sense of loss that we learned of the passing of Sister Agnes Whalen Johnson. For forty-one years I have pastored the Owingsville First Church of God, where Dale Whalen was their first pastor, Agnes was their first pastor\’s wife, and the church was their first pastorate. Even though over sixty years have passed since that time, the legacy that they leave behind still lives and they are remembered for their love, compassion and effective church leadership. They laid the groundwork for a solid church congregation that is alive and well today. After a while and after Bro. Dale\’s passing, Agnes married Rev. J.R. Johnson, who was also from the Owingsville/Bath County area, and together, the legacy that J.R. and Agnes leaves to our community here is one of faith, hope and enduring love. Sister Agnes lived a live that mattered, she was a loving person who was greatly loved, and her life made a difference. She found happiness in the midst of loss and joy in the midst of sorrow. She will be so greatly missed. But, as one of the ladies in the Owingsville First Church of God, Sister Roxie Manley, who was a founder of the Owingsville First Church of God and a dear friend of Dale and Agnes, used to say when someone died, \”absent from the body but present with the Lord\”. This is our hope and comfort today.

  11. I will always remember Agnes as the most pleasant, smiling, gracious and faithful lady. She was always all of those things! She had the prettiest white teeth and used that smile freely. She knew her faith in Christ would usher her into Heaven, so her weight loss \”worries everyone but me\”, she said with a smile, of course. Encouragement was her way of blessing others, you could count on hearing kind, uplifting, complementary words from her. She was everything I would like to be and I look forward to seeing here again.

  14. Agnes impacted countless lives, including my family. All the tributes and accolades people share about her from their personal experiences are things to which we could all say \”amen,\” for the love she received from her Lord & Savior was freely given to all. Of course it was personalized to each one\’s need and situation–she just had that gift of making you feel like your need, your situation, your family was of utmost importance. And few people have, as Agnes had, a delightful mixture of sass and grace, frankness and kindness, laughter and concern, adventure and calm. It has been a gift and a blessing to have worshiped with her and J.R. at Danville 1st Church of God, and I will always treasure her encouragement, concern for my family, prayers and love.
