Sally Houston Read Hammond, 83, died October 11, 2017 at Granite Hill Farm in Danville, Kentucky — her home for the past 45 years. Throughout her life she remained a steadfast example of kindness and generosity.
Sally was born October 15, 1933 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Dr. Joseph C. and Mary W. Read. She was the eldest of two daughters; her sister Mary R. Peckham preceded her in death. Sally graduated Summa Cum Laude from Duke University prior to her marriage to the late A.D. “Dick” Hammond Jr. They married in Atlanta, Georgia on March 16, 1957 and were together for 57 years. Sally was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend to all. She was a long-time member of Centenary Methodist Church in Danville, KY
She is survived by her children Ellen H. (William K.) Davis of Taylorsville, KY, Martha H. (Hugh) Mery of Louisville, KY, and Wade H. Smith of Lexington, Ky; her grandchildren: Brian R. (Maria) Davis of Cincinnati, OH and James B. Davis of Louisville, Ky; her great-grandchildren: Elfrieda “Ellie” Maria and William “Liam” Seamus Davis of Cincinnati, OH; her niece: Mary Elizabeth Mullee of Apopka, FL; her nephew: Byron Brooks of Ridgefield, CT and her cousin John Warren of Cashiers, NC. A very special thank you to our longtime friend and caregiver Pamela Kincaid.
The visitation will be Sunday October 15, 2017 beginning at 4 pm at Stith Funeral Home, Danville, KY. The funeral service will be officiated by Reverend Quentin Scholtz and Reverend Scott Stith and will be held at 11am, Monday, October 16, 2017 at Centenary Methodist Church in Danville, KY. Pallbearers will be Byron Brooks, William K. Davis, Brian R. Davis, James B. Davis, Wade H. Smith, and Bob York. . Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John Horn, Darrell Chadwell, Larry Hampton, Mort Hoagland and Hugh Mery. Interment will be at Bellevue Cemetery in Danville, Ky Memorial donations may be made to the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society or the charity of their choice.

TODD and I did a lot of growing up In her home and in the company of her family. The love and wisdom she shared so generously has flowed through our lives and down the generations. Heaven has gained a very special angel.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Mrs. Hammond was always so kind to me and welcomed me to the farm many times. She was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.
