Lewis “Dan” Daniel McCarter, 74, died May 30, 2021. Born July 10, 1946, in Danville, son of the late Lawrence Hubert and Edna Broyles McCarter. At the age of 17, Dan joined the United States Army and received his GED while stationed at Fort Knox. By the age of 18, he started his first tour to Vietnam. Before the age of 21, he had earned a purple heart, 4 bronze stars and a silver star. Dan served four tours to Vietnam, two tours to Germany and one tour to South Korea. From 1987-1991, he was a Professor of Military Science for the ROTC program at Western Kentucky University. Dan worked at Northpoint Training Center and then Grider Furniture until he retired. He was a member of the VFW and AMVETS. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Jackie Cecilia Davis McCarter; a son, Christopher Daniel McCarter; and three siblings, Jerry McCarter, Johnny McCarter, and Becky McCarter. Lewis is survived by two daughters, Lisa Peyton of Danville, and Dana Johnson of Frankfort; three granddaughters Brittany Wash of Perryville, Victoria Peyton of Danville, and Katie (Brandon) Bertram of Monticello; a great-grandson, Jeb Parker McDaniel; four sisters Jan Spray of Mount Juliet, Tennessee, Judy (Paul) Wurtman of Pace, Florida, Sue Whitworth of La Grange, and Nancye Combs of Louisville; and two brothers William (Lynne) McCarter of Tennessee, and Roger McCarter of Mount Juliet, Tennessee. The funeral service will be at 12 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2021 at Stith Funeral Home, Junction City. Chaplain (Major) Joshua Stine will officiate the service. Burial will be at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Clinton Terry, William Rogers, John Davis, Donnie Davis, Dennis Davis, Mike Wash, Cecil McElroy. Honorary pallbearers will be Wendell Jessee, Lloyd Bowling, Harold Oaks, Cindy Oaks, Charles Hunter, William McCarter, and Roger McCarter. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Memorial donations are suggested to The American Cancer Society or Heritage Hospice.
