John Lewis Durham, III died October 12, 2023 in Lexington, KY following a short illness. Johnny was born in Danville, KY on July 7, 1942. He was the son of the late Carolyn Fielder Smithson Durham and John Lewis \"Jack\" Durham II. He was also predeceased by his wife, Juanita \"Cubby\" Durham. Johnny was a lifelong member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He graduated from Danville High School and Centre College. While attending Centre, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America, where he earned his Eagle Scout Award and worked at Philmont Ranch in Cimmaron, New Mexico, for several summers. He was a Realtor and Auctioneer and volunteered as the auctioneer of many charity auctions for 4H, FFA, Heritage Hospice, Ducks Unlimited, and the Wild Turkey Federation. He volunteered and served on the boards of the Danville-Boyle Co. Animal Shelter, Jaycees, Rotary Club and the Kiwanis Club. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War where he captained a Swift Boat. He retired in 1992 with a rank of Captain from the Naval Reserves. Johnny also loved doing things on his farm, riding his horses, and working his cattle. Later in life, he loved spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends and traveling to as many places as possible. He is survived by his three daughters, Caribeth (Brian) Brown (Roanoke, AL), Sidney L. Durham (Lexington, KY), and Jaymie (Steven) Ross (Middleburg, KY); a brother, Roger (Lisa) Durham (Eureka, CA) and five grandchildren: Hunter Jack Ross, Lillian \"Lillie\" Cassandra Brown, Gage Wyatt Ross, John Sawyer Durham and Mattalin \"Mattie\" Elizabeth Brown. He leaves behind many treasured memories with all of those that knew and loved him. Visitation will be from 4 - 7 p.m., October 26, 2023, at Centenary Methodist Church. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m., October 27, 2023, also at the church. Rev. Chris Morgan will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be Nina Kirkland, Ben Wynd, Robert Hamlin, Tom Hall, Robert Hundley, Wick Caldwell, Rick Hood, George Birk and Jim Butler. Memorial donations may be sent to the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society. The online register book is available at www.stithcares.com.   1. John\’s not being with us anymore leaves a very large void. He was a friend to many. I knew him for many years and felt he was a friend.

  2. I knew Johnny through the Naval Reserve were we served together for over 20 years. He was a dear friend, and more importantly, he was a shipmate. I regret that I am unable to attend his visitation or service. To his family I offer my sincere condolences. To my shipmate Johnny, as he sets sail on his new journey, I offer the traditional valediction of fair winds and a following sea. I will miss you my friend. Josh
