James Douglas Pope, 52, was called home to be with our Lord, Monday, September 21, 2020. He was born in Danville, KY on September 21, 1968 to the late Kitty Marie McGill and Duke Marvin Pope. James graduated from Danville High School in 1987. He was an avid reader and loved music. He was loved by all with whom he crossed paths. James proudly served in the United States Marine Corp from 1988-1990. He spent his last year in Louisville, at The Healing Place where he made a huge impact on peers and created many meaningful bonds and friendships with other residents. James’ smile, laugh, and loving personality will be missed by many near and far.
He is survived by his father, Duke Pope; a son, Christopher Pope of Danville; two daughters, Whitney Schlenker and Brooklyn Pope both of California; a sister Jaclyn McGill of Cincinnati; a brother, Marvin McKinzy of California; a step-father, Norman McGill of Danville; and his fiancé, Daphne Belcher, of Danville in addition to a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Kitty Marie McGill.
Visitation will be held at Stith Funeral Home in Danville from 5pm–7pm on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, September 30th at Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Rev. Barry Bowman will officiate. Pallbearers will be MaKaiya McGill, James Scott, Norman McGill, Chad Martin, Steven Goodman, and Kenny Adams. Memorial donations are suggested to The Healing Place in Louisville, Kentucky. I’m so sorry to hear this. I have so many memories of Doug and Tommy both. I think Doug and I had the same teachers in every grade in elementary. He drove me crazy pestering me some days then would flash that dazzling smile and laugh and apologize. Mischievous should have been his middle name. It makes me sad that I haven’t seen him since graduation. RIP Doug.

We were so very sorry to hear of James’ passing. James lived with us for several years while Whitney and Brooklyn were small. He was fun and always kind and polite to us, his in-laws. We’re so glad that Whitney and Brooklyn were able to travel from California to Kentucky to meet their dad’s relatives. They’ve been welcomed and met with loving kindness as their dad would have done.
Jesus welcomed him home .

Rest in peace my dear friend and classmate .. He was such a kind person and way after our classmate years he and James Scott would come sit on my Dads porch with me and talk of there military days… Doug always had a kind smile and kind word… Rest in peace my dear friend….. Peace .. Love you
