Helen Lynde Palmer passed away at her home on September 23, 2024, at the age of 89. Helen was born on June 12, 1935, in New York, New York to George W. Palmer and Elisabeth T. Salter.  She received a BA degree from Centre College and a Master’s degree from the University of Kentucky.

In her early career, she worked as a Dietitian in New York City and was the first Dietitian at Ephraim McDowell Hospital.  She also did teaching stints at the University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University, and Morehead State University.  Later, she taught Boyle County 4-H classes, dog obedience classes, and wrote a newspaper column in the Danville Advocate Messenger for many years.

She was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron Honorary Fraternity, American Dietetic Association, and the Bluegrass Dietetic Association.  She received the 4-H Meritorious Services Award and was nominated for the Conrad Feltner 4-H Leadership Award.  She also received the Pedigree Outstanding Journalist Award and numerous awards from the Dog Writers Association of America.

She is survived by her niece Elisabeth (John) Akin of Georgetown, Ky, and three nephews, Richard (Mindy) Peck of Frankfort, KY, Robert (Angie) Peck of Versailles, KY, and John Peck of Louisville, KY.

She also leaves behind her very close and dear friends Cheri Carbone, Patsy Searcy, and Joyce “Briggsy” Allen.

Helen was predeceased by her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Salter of Danville, KY, her parents, George W. Palmer and Elisabeth T. Salter Palmer, of New York, New York, and her sister Mimi Peck of Versailles, KY.

Much appreciation is given to Visiting Angels of Versailles, KY, who took wonderful care of Helen during her last months and especially to Ruby and McKenzie with whom she developed a close relationship.

A funeral Mass will be held at 12 pm on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Danville.  The Celebrant will be Father Danny Schwendemen.  Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mutts with Manners c/o the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society.  An online guestbook is available at www.stithcares.com
