Elaine Louise Funkhouser
December 29, 1926 ~ July 3, 2025
Elaine Louise (Armitage) Funkhouser passed away on July 3, 2025, in Danville, KY.
Elaine was born on December 29, 1926, in Attica, Ohio to Hayward and Velma (Frankenfield) Armitage. She married Richard Funkhouser on November 13, 1947, and he preceded her in death in 2002. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Stallings, in 2021, brother-in-law, William Stallings, in 2007 and son-in-law, Dennis Shoup, in 1993.
Elaine is survived by her daughters, Roxann (James) Young of New Washington, Ohio, Janie (Steve) Elder of Derby, Kansas and son, Tom Funkhouser of Danville, Kentucky. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Hilary (Rod) Bowerman, Scott (Christie) Shoup, Mark (Joanna Freed) Strohminger, Ryan (Jerrica) Funkhouser, and Ian Funkhouser and three step-grandchildren, Jessica (Scott) Wagner, Travis (Hollie) Elder and Tyler (Christina) Elder. Also, surviving are great-grandchildren, Caleb (Lauren) Strohminger, Madison Shoup, Keegan Shoup, Drew Bowerman, Addilee Funkhouser, Brody Funkhouser, Collier Funkhouser, thirteen step-great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, Collins Jane Strohminger.
Elaine grew up in Attica and on the family farm west of town. She attended Attica Schools and graduated in 1944. She went on to nurses’ training which was cut short because she couldn’t stand the heat in the operating rooms! That would not be the case today! She went on to work for Dr. Robert Cahill until she had children. When her children were grown, she worked for dentists, Dr. John Kofol and Dr. David Kagy, until she retired.
She was active in the Attica United Methodist Church teaching Sunday school for many years, being involved in the ladies’ circle and helping with funeral and Rotary dinners. She was also a member of the Red Hats Society enjoying time with friends.
In 2010 she moved with Tom’s family to Danville, Kentucky, where she resided until her passing.
Services will be at Shook Funeral Home in Bloomville, Ohio. https://www.shookfamilyfh.com/obituary/Elaine-Funkhouser
