Gary T. Gibson
September 9, 1941 ~ September 9, 2026
Gary Tinley Gibson, age 85, died surrounded by family at his home in Danville, Kentucky, on September 9, 2026, his 85th birthday.
Born in Hazard, Kentucky, Gary graduated from Danville High School in 1959 and from Eastern Kentucky University in 1964. Following college, he served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1970, including tours of duty in Germany and Vietnam. His service to his country was an important part of who he was, and he carried that same sense of duty and commitment into the rest of his life.
Gary began his professional life in the family business, Central Wholesale, where he worked alongside his father and became a familiar and trusted presence in the regional business community. Later, he joined Stuart Powell Ford Mazda, where he spent many years building strong friendships and relationships that extended well beyond his work of selling cars.
Gary was a longtime member and elder emeritus of First Christian Church in Danville. His faith was not simply a part of his life, but a quiet foundation for the way he lived it. He was also an active member of the Danville Kiwanis Club, where he enjoyed the fellowship and opportunity to serve his community.
Gary was most proud of his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, and he treasured the people who surrounded him. He and his wife of 26 years, Cheryl, shared a life filled with family, faith, friendship and love. He was immensely proud of his two sons, Christopher (Liz) and Michael (Jane), and he welcomed his three bonus children, Mary Quinn (Jeff), Simms (Jennifer) and Martha (Daniel), as his own. His family was made even richer by his grandchildren: Alie, Adie, Eyan, Sophia, Winston, Charlotte, Wolfe, Wren, Eliza and Ben, who brought him immeasurable joy.
Gary also leaves behind his brother, Steve Gibson, and a lifetime of friends and family who will remember his kindness, his loyalty, and his sincere presence in their lives.
Gary leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and a community that was better because he was part of it. His life was one of service, faith, and, most of all, love for the people around him. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on September 12, 2026 at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. the same day. Honorary pallbearers will be the Danville High School class of 1959.
Out of profound gratitude for the compassionate care given to Gary, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Heritage Hospice or Visiting Angels

Gary was a Good Man. I will miss him.
Gary was such a good guy, and I know many of us will miss his warm smile. My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Cheryl, and your family. You were such a support for Gary in his time of need for many years. He was so fortunate to have a wife like you whose love carried him through the challenges he had to face. God bless you!
Gary was a great friend through the years and lots of fun to be around. He will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to Cheryl.
Mary and I thought so much of Gary. A gentle spirit, and I never heard him raise his voice in an unkind way, even when hiking with Troop 326 many years ago on the Misha Mocha Trail. Chris and all the scouts remember his snoring, as none of us could sleep because of the constant snoring. Rest in peace Gary and our prayers are with the family.
Gary was a good and kind man. Prayers for all the family.
