Virginia Ann (Day) Powell, 92, a beloved member of the Menifee County community, died peacefully Thursday, December 14, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 10, 1931, on Tarr Ridge Road, Mariba, Kentucky to the late Robert Alvis and Elsie (Northcutt) Day.

Mrs. Powell dedicated her life to education, and her passion for teaching touched the lives of countless students throughout her career. With a bachelor’s degree in education in hand, from the University of Kentucky, she became a respected and cherished teacher in Menifee County, where she shared her knowledge and nurtured young minds.

Virginia, also known as “Annie” and “VirginiaAnn”, loved music and singing.  She attended many family gatherings, whether reunions or funerals, she was always willing to participate with her family members, many of whom were talented musicians. She also taught her children the love of music. For many years she was the song leader at the Frenchburg Presbyterian Church.

Deeply devoted to her faith, Virginia was an active member and elder in the Presbyterian Church, where she found comfort, solace, and community. Her resilient spirit and unwavering faith served as an inspiration to all who knew her.

She married the late Robert E. Powell of Danville at the Frenchburg Presbyterian in 1955 after they both graduated from college, where they met. She was known as “Ginny” to her husband, “Bob”,

She loved sports, especially UK basketball and football. While still teaching, she attended many high school basketball games when her children participated.

Besides her parents and husband, Virginia was pre-deceased by her brother, James O. Day, son-in-law, Harrison Underhill, and, son-in-law, Roy Wells.

Virginia is survived by her children, Margaret Wells of Frenchburg, Nancy {Rod} Durall of Lexington, John Powell of Frenchburg, and Stephen Powell of Mt. Sterling; her siblings Eula Klenk of Mt Sterling, George (Pat) Day of Alexandria, VA and, sister-in-law, Dorothy Day of Fort Worth, TX; four grandchildren Conner Powell, Stuart Powell, Morgan Wells Cain and Ezra Wells; three great-grandchildren Betty Cain, Alice Cain, and Jethro Cassidy; and a host of nieces, nephew, cousins, and friends.

Virginia will be remembered for her kind heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering dedication to her loved ones. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and the countless individuals whose lives were enriched by her wisdom and guidance.

A family graveside service will take place at a later date. She will be buried with her husband in Bellevue Cemetery in Danville.  A celebration of life will be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Virginia’s memory to the Menifee County Library, as it was an organization close to her heart.
