Lucy Odell Kidd Hines, a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024, at the age of 97. She was born on May 13, 1926 in Garrard County and lived a long and fulfilling life. Odell will be deeply mourned by all who knew and loved her. Odell was predeceased by her father, William Delbert Kidd and her mother, Mary Ellen Peace and her step-father, Opie Leonard Herrin. She was also predeceased by her late husband, Joseph “Joe” Rowan Hines Jr.
Raised in Somerset, she was a proud graduate of Somerset High School where she was a majorette in the school band and a member of the National Honor Society. Her lively spirit and dedication to her school made her a standout among her peers.
Odell was the switchboard operator at the Somerset Hospital before she became the founder and office manager of the first Home Health Service in Somerset.
After moving to Danville, Odell was an active member of the First Christian Church where she was a Deacon and Elder, and a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship Class. Her devotion to her faith led her to serve as a deacon where she touched the lives of many through her kindness and compassion.
In addition to her church involvement, she was a member of the Wilderness Trail Homemakers Club and her commitment to fostering relationships and nurturing her community set an example for all who knew her.
Odell enjoyed playing bridge and participating in the annual DCC Ladies Teacup golf tournament. As a dedicated participant and supporter, she contributed to the success of the event, which brought joy and camaraderie to all those involved.
Although deeply saddened by her passing, Odell Hines leaves behind her loving daughter and son-in-law, Jodell and Jim Brown, who will hold her memory close to their hearts. Their bond was a testament to the profound love between a mother and her child. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Jay (Amy) Newell and Christopher Newell, James Bently Brown and Sally Ester Abigail Brown (Mike Nichols) and great-grandchildren Joseph Connor Newell, Kira Brown and Olivia Nichols.
A graveside service to honor the life of Odell will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, January 29, 2024 at the Somerset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the First Christian Church, Danville, Ky. or the Wilderness Trail Homemakers Club.
