George Leslie Cunningham, 96, a beloved member of the Danville community, peacefully passed away on January 28, 2024, He was born on September 7, 1927, in Danville, to the late George and Josie Cunningham. George was a devoted family man, successful business owner, and proud Army veteran. He is preceded in death by his wife Gladys Hurst Cunningham and their son G. Joseph “Joe” Cunningham.

George graduated from Columbia Military Academy and later attended Centre College. He served in the Army of Occupation, where he was stationed in Vienna, Austria. Then while attending Centre was drafted a second time and was a sergeant in the Korean War. George’s time in the service instilled in him a deep sense of duty and honor, which he carried throughout his life.

After returning home, George embarked on a successful career as a business owner. On November 3, 1951, he became the proud owner of Durham Hardware, a well-known establishment in the community. George’s commitment to providing exceptional service earned him the respect and loyalty of his customers. He dedicated over four decades to his business before passing it on to Butch Taylor and Billy Mills upon his retirement in 1995.

George cherished his family he is survived by his son, James Cunningham of Lexington, three grandchildren Joseph Chase (Rhonda) Cunningham, Leslie Marie Cunningham, and Carley Nell Cunningham, and two great-grandchildren Aviana Cunningham and Ainslee Cunningham.

From George: “I want to tell you thank you for all the support this community gave me for the 60+ years I have been a merchant. I have often wondered how big a mountain the merchandise you have bought would build. Thank you my faithful customers and to all my supporters. Thank you for being so supportive in electing me 10 times.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Centenary Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Morgan officiating. Visitation will be from 4 – 6 p.m., Monday at Centenary Methodist Church.
Honorary pallbearers will be Butch Taylor, Bud Traynor, Jack Pemberton, Ted Baker, Bill Shafer, and members of the John Pruitt Sunday School Class. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army and the American Legion Caswell Saufley Post 18.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Salvation Army of Danville
