Evelyn Friend Newsom, 92, died Monday, March 27, 2017.  Born on April 5, 1924 in Pike County to James Pembroke Friend and Clarissa Mullins Friend, she was the only sister to six brothers. She was happily married to Goebel Newsom Jr., and lived for many years in Elkhorn City, Richmond and Danville, KY.  A recognized elementary education teacher, she was named a Star Teacher in her native Pike County.  She also taught many years at Brier Hill Elementary in Fayette County.  A noted fisherwoman, she regularly fished at Dale Hollow Lake while teaching many novice fishermen the tools of the trade.    An Eastern Star Member, a member or the Joy Class at  Lexington Avenue Baptist Church, a devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she will be missed.

She is survived by a brother, a son and daughter-in-law and a grandson and granddaughter-in-law.

Visitation will be held 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30, 2017 at Stith Funeral Home in Danville.  A private, family only, graveside service will be held at Bellevue Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the Newsom Scholarship Fund at Berea College to benefit college students who have need.
